September 5, 2012 – ComEd recently provided the Village of Glenview with a list of infrastructure improvements made in 2012 to benefit Glenview, part of its ongoing investment in the electric system and a result of the recently-enacted Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act.
ComEd reported that more than 2,100 feet of underground residential distribution cable had been treated or replaced so far this year, and some 40,000 additional feet was planned for replacement by the end of the year.
Underground residential development (URD) cable is either injected to fill in voids in the insulation or replaced where necessary to reduce the number of customer service interruptions due to cable failures.
n More than 2,100 feet refurbished or replaced so far in 2012:
o 378 feet replaced near Pfingsten Road and Miller Drive
o 648 feet injected near Harvest Lane and Maple Leaf Drive
o 814 feet injected near Keenan Lane and Pfingsten Road
o 339 feet injected near Miller Drive and Chester Drive
n More than 40,000 feet of additional cable planned by the end of 2012:
o 7,615 feet to be replaced near Dearlove Road and Cove Lane (November 13 start, weather permitting)
o 8,506 feet to be replaced near Waukegan Road and Wildberry Drive (Oct. 4 start, weather permitting)
o 17,185 feet to be replaced near Shermer Road and Princeton Lane (October 22 start, weather permitting)
o 7,205 feet to be replaced near Pfingsten Road and Maple Leaf Drive (November 5 start, weather permitting)
o 2,901 feet to be replaced near Glenview Road and Cove Lane (November 28 start, weather permitting)

Here’s the data broken out by total overall work done in Glenview or along circuits that impact some Glenview customers:
n Distribution Automation Devices installed – 5
These devices are designed to improve performance and reduce interruptions. They allow the utility to automatically dtect issues on the system and re-route power around the problem, with only a brief interruption in service. This technology minimizes the number of customers affected by an outage by isolating the problem area and making automatic, real-time adjusting to the electric grid.
o Near Lavergne Avenue and Emerson Street (2)
o North of Milwaukee Avenue on Sanders Road (1)
o North Parkway Drive and
o Sanders Road (3)
n Trip Savers installed – 13
These devices are used in place of a traditional fuse to minimize the number of permanent outages caused by trees, wildlife, lightning and other weather-related outages. The fuse resets itself and avoids sustained outages.
o Central Road at Michael Manor Drive (1)
o Wagner Road and Linden Lane (4)
o Harrison Street and Spruce Street (1)
o Landwehr Road and Chester Drive (1)
o Central Road and Revere Road; Countryside Lane and Countryside Court; Countryside Lane and Milwaukee Avenue (3)
o Harrison Street and Washington Street (2)
n Hendrix Cable – more than 7,700 feet installed
Hendrix, or spacer, cable is an overhead installation of covered, bundled primary wire than can withstand tree branches and small tree contact. By “hardening” circuits in areas historically vulnerable to weather-related damage, the susceptibility of certain mainline circuits and fuse taps to weather-related damage is reduced.
o 2,040 feet in the area of Golf Road at Elm Street (June 2012)
o 1,370 feet in the area of Wagner Road and Winnetka Road (February 2012)
o 2,500 feet in the area of Greendale Road, Hillside Road, Revere Road and Countryside Lane (March 2012)
o 1,825 feet in the area of Meadow Lane, Linneman Street and Glenshire Road (April 2012)
