Can Village staff tell me if a property is in the floodplain? Can staff tell me what the floodzone designation is for a property?

To an extent. Village Engineering staff have access to the most recent FEMA floodplain maps, but these maps do not show individual lots. Therefore, a more detailed study of properties which are close to the floodplain may be necessary in order to make a definitive judgment (see Floodmap Information Request Form).

It is also important to note that simply because an area is not in a FEMA designated floodplain does NOT insure that there are no localized drainage problems in the neighborhood or with the lot in question..

Do I need flood insurance for the home I'm considering buying in Glenview?

This question can only be answered by the financial institution that will handle your mortgage. The Engineering Division can, at your request, investigate and tell you whether or not the property in question appears to be in a FEMA designated floodplain.

Will Glenview Public Works install drains or pipes in my backyard to drain it?

(Please also see Addressing Home Drainage Issues)

No. Our Public Works Department does not work on private property. It is the private property owners responsibility to remedy such issues. However, a group of affected residents may approach the Village with a plan to drain the area and divide the cost amongst themselves. The Village will work with residents to resolve the problem, sometimes through the implementation of a "special service area" or SSA.

Who maintains culverts within the Village of Glenview?

Residents are responsible to maintain culverts even if located in the public right-of-way.

What are the current Village requirements regarding detention ponds/basins?

The most current requirements are included in the Engineering Standards Manual.
