In our Food Protection Program we routinely inspect restaurants, retail food stores, taverns, bakeries, caterers,
schools, day care centers and homes, nursing homes, hospitals, mobile food
vendors, warehouses, and temporary food services (carnivals, holiday bazaars,
etc.). We also perform emergency inspections in these
establishments due to fires, floods, or other hazardous incidents. We have at
this time 259 food establishments which
we inspect. In 2006, 1,285 inspections were performed.
Our Environmental Sanitation Program consists of inspections of public swimming pools and spas, barber
shops, massage establishments, laundry and dry cleaners, pet shops and kennels,
and automobile service stations. We presently inspect the
public pools and spas on a routine basis. We inspect the other establishments
on a complaint basis only.
The Division investigates
complaints concerning all of those establishments which we
inspect as well as air pollution, animals and birds, garbage storage, weeds,
debris, noise pollution, rodents and insects, odors, and any other potential
health hazards. In 2006 the Division conducted 1,598 inspections and/or
responses to citizen requests. The Division is becoming more involved in
occurrences involving hazardous wastes and hazardous materials, mostly
pesticides and petroleum based products.
The Division reviews all
plans and blue prints for new or renovated food service establishments,
schools, swimming pools and spas (both public and private), demolitions
(commercial and residential), new water services, and other establishments
under our jurisdiction. We reviewed 343 plans in 2006.
