The active participation of citizens and stakeholders is critical to the project’s success. Ultimately, stakeholder involvement and ownership will make the implementation of this planning process feasible. Kick-Off Event The charrette will begin on a Friday evening with a presentation that describes the elements of effective corridor planning and introduces the overall charrette process, followed by a general Q & A discussion with audience members. Hands-on Design Session The following Saturday morning, participants gather around tables in small groups with a facilitator to identify important issues. Group issues are drawn or written onto large scale base maps of the area. At the conclusion of this session, a spokesperson from each table presents the table’s findings before the larger group. These presentations allow participants to share common goals, and provide an opportunity for in-depth discussion of specific issues. Open Design Studio From Sunday through Wednesday, an on-site design studio is set up in a local storefront within the study area. The consultant team analyzes information gathered at the Hands-on Design Session and begins to formulate initial concepts for the plan. Community residents, elected officials, local stakeholders, and business people are encouraged to stop in to discuss ideas and to check on the status of the project. The hands-on nature of the studio facilitates the identification and resolution of issues. Since the open design studio allows the highest possible level of community involvement, it helps to achieve the consensus needed to implement the plan. Work-in Progress Presentation Wednesday evening, the charrette team will present initial sketches illustrating a refined conceptual vision for the area. “Before” and “after” simulations showing possible development scenarios are also presented. A summary of plan strategies may also be presented, highlighting opportunities for redevelopment and general roles and actions needed to facilitate implementation of the proposed plan. |
