The Milwaukee Avenue Corridor provides a significant opportunity for sustainable growth and economic development well into the 21st Century. A plan for this corridor will enable the Village to study existing and proposed land uses in greater detail and develop recommendations for the Village Board. This project will provide a long-term vision for the corridor based on a consensus of the community’s values; protect and enhance the fundamental features of the corridor; address specific planning problems regarding traffic and redevelopment; and create a coordinated framework of regulatory tools to assist in the implementation of the vision plan.

Code Studio, a Texas-based planning firm, was chosen by Village officals to help develop an agreed-upon vision for the corridor. For this project, Code Studio will employ a proven participatory tool that supports genuine public participation to produce a detailed plan for the corridor.Public participation charrettes have unequaled effectiveness in identifying and focusing citizen participation. As participants see their ideas incorporated into the plan, they recognize their concerns are being addressed and take ownership of the design. Participants often see their desires for their community are remarkably similar to other local residents. The charrette will focus on engaging the community and gathering additional ideas, concepts, goals, and implementation strategies. While the focus will be on refining the community vision, the process will also lead to specific discussions relating to future development, such as transportation connections, green spaces, and urban design strategies that create more vital centers and livable neighborhoods.
