Becoming a GVTV Volunteer

Just as with the Village Newsletter or Village website, GVTV is a key part of how the Village communicates with its residents and it relies heavily on a dedicated volunteer staff to create all of its cable television programming. If you are at least 18 years of age and looking for a unique way to contribute to your comminuty this is your chance! Keep reading to find out how you can participate in this exciting volunteer opportunity.

We will teach you what you need to know!

Volunteering at Glenview Television is a great way to make a difference to the Glenview community, learn about television production and meet new people. No previous video production experience or formal education is necessary to be a GVTV Volunteer. Hands on training is provided FREE of charge by professional instructors at a pace that is best suited to your individual skill level. As a part of your training you will learn all aspects of television production including how to be a:

  • Producer
  • Director
  • Digital camera operator
  • Non-linear editor
  • On-camera talent

Once certified as a GVTV Volunteer, you will have access to our state of the art equipment and facilities as well as the opportunity to work with Village staff and other volunteers creating programs for air on GVTV.

Core volunteer opportunities assigned by Village staff may include:

  • Director - responsible for the overall production (live or videotaped) and participates in all aspects of the program’s creation, “from script to screen.”
  • Producer - works with the Village Department, Division or other nonprofit entity to flesh out, refine, and implement a program idea. This includes finding the necessary talent, props, collecting talent releases, as well as communicating with all members of the production team to insure a smooth production.
  • Editor - works with the producer and or director to import raw video footage into the computer and assemble the necessary video clips, audio tracks and graphics needed to complete the program for air.
  • Production Assistant - works under the supervision of the director and may operate digital camera or audio equipment during live and taped video productions as well as create and distribute DVD copies as needed.

Interested? Here is what we ask of you:

  • Donate a minimum of five hours a month creating Village programs for air on GVTV.
  • Be available at least once per quarter to assist with the coverage of Village Board or Commission meetings.
  • Conduct yourself in a courteous and professional manner at all times when interacting with Village staff, other volunteers or customers.
  • Remain impartial and above reproach when acting as an agent of Glenview Television; no politicking or personal opinions should be expressed.

It is important to remember that when working as a GVTV Volunteer you are representing the Village.

How is GVTV Administered?

It is the responsibility of the Communications Director, under the direction of the Village Manager’s Office, to manage the facility, exercising professional judgment in administering policies set forth by the Village Board.

This includes, but is not limited to, acting as Executive Producer of all programs produced by GVTV, developing and issuing additional Operating Policies as necessary to carry out the Mission Statement and determining the schedule for production, cablecast and or webcast of programming.

GVTV is a part of the Village’s Communications Division, which is under the auspices of the Village Manager’s Office. The Division Director is responsible for carrying out the station’s mission, and has final authority regarding its goals, operating policies, and strategic direction.

Day-to-day station management – programming, production, volunteer management and management of facilities and equipment -- is provided by the Cable Coordinator with the support of a Production Assistant. The Coordinator – as authorized by the Director -- reviews all proposed programs; they may be accepted as presented, turned down completely, or given conditional approval based on the need for revisions or deletions.

The Communications Director reserves the right to review all programs, proposed and/or completed, to determine compliance with operating policies, objectives, technical standards and restrictions. Any program under consideration may be accepted as presented, may be turned down completely, or may be given conditional approval.

In the case of conditional approval, a program may be deemed appropriate and worthy, except for stated objectionable, offensive or restricted program portions, which will be listed as needing revision or deletion from the program.

The presenter of the program will then have the option of making all specified changes or withdrawing the program from consideration altogether.

Program quality standards

All submitted material must be provided in broadcast quality, meeting technical standards determined by the Communications Director or his/her designee and be accompanied by fully completed forms whenever applicable. All non-GVTV produced programming requires a disclaimer before and after the showing of the program.

Security requirement

All potential volunteers must have current proof of address and satisfactorily complete a background check to be conducted by local law enforcement. Background checks may be required on an annual basis for all certified volunteers.
