Now that we have turned our clocks back, we can’t help but notice how darkness appears earlier. Patrol officers have reported several areas of vulnerability which if corrected, could reduce or eliminate potential security problems. The following suggestions may seem obvious, but are noted on a regular basis:
1. Lights are a deterrent to potential
criminals. Criminals don’t want to be seen. Leave exterior
lights on all night or consider motion sensors with the lights.
2. Make sure your house number is displayed
prominently on the front of your home or driveway mailbox. In an
emergency every second counts while trying to determine the location of
the problem.
3. Keep garage doors closed and locked overnight. An open door is an open invitation.
4. Lock the doors on all vehicles parked in driveways
or on the street. The police department encounters fewer unlawful
entries into vehicles when the doors have been locked.
5. If you plan to be away from home for a period of
time, ask a neighbor to clear snow off your drive and walkway. If
nothing else, ask them to drive in and out of your driveway a few times
to give the appearance of activity at your home.
These are five low cost and quick ways to improve the security of your
home, and to help us help you!
