Public Works

Streets

The Village of Glenview maintains more than 133 miles of road and 167 miles of sidewalk. The Street Team is responsible for pothole patching, sign maintenance, street sweeping, snow plowing and sidewalk repair and maintenance.

Patching and Paving

The Street Team is responsible for pothole patching and sign maintenance. Major street improvements, which are prioritized after evaluation of all paved roads, are planned in cooperation with the Engineering Division and are performed by private contractors overseen by that division.

Street Sweeping

Curbed streets are swept on a rotating basis. The current time between sweeping cycles is approximately 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the time of year. Sweeping frequency is greater in the spring and fall. No street sweeping is done in winter or whenever the temperature drops below freezing.

Snow and Ice Control

Salting operations are initiated upon the onset of hazardous conditions. The salting of Village arterial and collector roads is done on a priority basis depending on traffic volume and safety considerations. Salting of each neighborhood intersection is not done on a routine basis unless a general condition of icing is present. Plowing operations are initiated after 1 to 2 inches of snow have fallen or as conditions warrant. Plow damage is repaired in the spring with dirt and seed. The Village does not clear snow at the end of driveways.

Overnight parking between 2 and 6 a.m. is prohibited on all public streets in the Village from December 1st through April 1st. (Here are the specifics for this year. This requirement facilitates snow plowing and public safety. For residents who have no means of off-street parking, on-street parking permits may be granted upon application to the Glenview Police Department. For more information regarding on-street parking permits, please contact the Police Department at (847) 729-5000.

Sidewalk Repair and Replacement

Replacement of deteriorated public sidewalks is funded 100 percent by the Village. The program is implemented on an area-by-area basis annually and only those sidewalks within that area are eligible for replacement in that year based upon available funding for the year. Exceptions are made for areas of sidewalk, elsewhere in the Village, deemed hazardous by the Public Works Department.
