Gallery Park Recreation Map

The centerpiece of the community, the 140-acre Gallery Park serves as a destination for all of Glenview.  It features the 45-acre Lake Glenview, 6 miles of walking and biking trails, an amphitheater, boardwalk, playgrounds, gardens, fountain, tennis courts, and athletic fields.  An expansive lawn area accommodates large community gatherings and Little Bear Garden provides activities for the young. The park is owned and maintained by the Village of Glenview.  The Village leases 10 acres to the Glenview Park District for Park Center and 18 acres to School District 34 for Attea Middle School.

The park is named after Admiral Dan Gallery, who commanded the Naval Air Reserve Training forces at the air station from 1952-54.  He is perhaps best known as the Commanding Officer of naval forces which captured the German U-505 submarine now displayed at Chicago’s Museum of Science & Industry.

Gallery Park is open at sunrise and closes at 11:00 p.m. daily.  Alcohol and grills are not permitted.  Also there is no swimming, ice-skating or boating.  The Village is studying the possibility of offering non-motorized rental boats at a future date.  Dogs must be on a leash and are not permitted in Little Bear Garden.

Fishing is permitted as of June 2004 and anglers should follow these rules:

A catch and release program is strictly enforced.  Carp are the only exception.
Fish in designated areas only.
Fishing hours are 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
The fishing season runs from May 15 to November 15 every year.
A valid Illinois fishing license is required.
The emptying of bait buckets into the lake is strictly prohibited.
Piers are handicapped accessible.
Spear, gig, and bow and arrow fishing are prohibited.
There is a one pole per person limit.

The lake is stocked with large-mouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, northern pike and walleye.

Little Bear Garden is a children's play area.  The Water Garden is a series of fountains that squirt water over a soft rubber surface that operates from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday.  Water is turned on May 15 of every year.

An accessible main trail for bicyclists and pedestrians circles Lake Glenview.  Secondary paths meander through prairie grasses and wetlands.  Trails are open daily throughout the year.  During the winter months, the paths are staked off for plowing, so pedestrians and bicyclists should use extra caution, especially at night or early morning.

The park offers ten acres of multi-purpose fields for organized sports programming and five tennis courts.  Glenview School District 34, in cooperation with the Glenview Park District, administers athletic field programming.

Visitors can find restrooms, vending, and drinking fountains in park pavilions located in the northwestern and southwestern portions of the park.  Restrooms are open from sunrise to 10:00 p.m. except in winter.  These amenities are also located in Park Center, the large community center at the south entrance of the park.

Parking is available on street and in lots along Chestnut Avenue and West Lake Avenue.  All parking regulations are enforced.
