Glenview Commissions

Village, Park District to Offer Emerald Ash Borer Workshops

The Emerald Ash Borer has caused damage to millions of trees across the country -- including Glenview. Mark your calendar for one of two special workshops on this noxious pest -- on Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. or Tuesday, May 10 at 6:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Park District and Village, both will take place at the Grove, 1421 Milwaukee Avenue. Please note: the Saturday workshop will include a trail walk. Dress for the weather! For more information about the EAB, check out www.emeraldashborer.info.

Techny Trail To Extend Into Downtown

Construction is underway on an extension of the Techny bike trail that currently stops at Chestnut Avenue. Funded by a federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) improvement grant, the newest section of this ten-foot wide concrete path on the west side of Lehigh Avenue will run south to Glenview Road and the new public library; completion is scheduled for early April, 2011 (if the weather cooperates).

Village Receives Tree City Growth Award

F or 26 years, the Village of Glenview has been proud to be named a “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. But this year there’s something extra to celebrate!

We’re proud to announce that the Village has received a Tree City Growth Award for going “above and beyond” the basic Tree City USA requirements. Sponsored by the the Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service, Growth Awards are designed to recognize exceptional achievement, to communicate new ideas and to help the leaders of all Tree City USAs plan for improving community tree care.

In singling out the Village for this special award, the Foundation recognized a number of things, including:

  • Updating the content and distribution of information residents can use regarding tree replacement, should the Village require replacements following the removal of an existing tree on their property.
  • The Village’s joint tree trimming contract with Wilmette, and
  • Its wildlife habitat improvements, including extensive detention basin plantings.
