Coronavirus (COVID-19) information

he Village and other members of the Glenview-Northbrook Coronavirus Task Force – the schools, park districts and libraries in Glenview and Northbrook – have been in near constant contact in the past few days. The safety, health and well-being of our citizens are the priority in our decision-making. In particular, guidance from federal, state and regional health experts has been to focus on social distancing – that is, to stop or slow the spread of COVID-19 through efforts to reduce close contact between people and hopefully stymie community transmission of the virus.

To that end, the Village has cancelled all board and commission meetings, as well as utilization of any spaces in Village Hall for public meetings. While the Glenview Municipal Center will remain open and all essential Village services will be functional, we strongly encourage residents to conduct business with the Village over the phone or through the internet.

Additionally, many governments in the township decided to close to the public at the end of the day Friday, March 13, and remain closed until at least March 30. This includes the Glenview Park District, the Glenview Public Library and school districts in Northfield Township, including Glenbrook High School District 225, Glenview School District 34, Northbrook-Glenview School District 30 and West Northfield School District 31. Also, New Trier High School District 203, Avoca School District 37 and Wilmette School District 39 are closed and have transferred classes to remote learning.

The Glenview Fire Department has been in direct contact with all of our senior living facilities to ensure plans are in place to reduce potential exposure.

What is a coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that range from the common cold to more serious diseases such as pneumonia. Some can cause illness in people, and others circulate among animals including camels, cats and bats. Animal coronaviruses rarely spread to people.

This new coronavirus was originally thought to be spreading from animal to person, but a large number of patients have not had exposure to animal markets, which means the virus is spreading person-to-person.

Human coronaviruses are common throughout the world and commonly cause mild to moderate illness in people worldwide. However, the emergence of new coronaviruses, such as SARS and MERS, have caused more severe respiratory (breathing) illness.

How can I avoid getting ill?

The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Facemaks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers, public safety responders and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

Still, you can prepare for the spread of the virus by taking these steps to stay healthy. Common-sense practices during the flu season are recommended:

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Avoid touching your face (eyes, nose, mouth) with unwashed hands
  • Stay at home if you feel ill and contact a doctor
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Clean frequently-touched surfaces and objects regularly
