Landscape Waste/Food Composting

Composting is nature’s way of recycling. It is one of the most powerful actions we can take to reduce our trash, reduce our carbon footprint and build healthy soil. By turning our food scraps and yard trim into compost, we can transform our waste streams into a beneficial, value-added soil amendment and use it to protect the environment and create resilient communities.

Glenview residents can take advantage of one of these four options to discard landscape waste and start composting.

Landscape Waste Options

Seasonal subscription

You can make a one-time payment to Groot for weekly curbside residential yard waste collection for the entire landscape waste season -- from late April through late November/early December. Effective July 1, 2023, the fee is $162.47, regardless of when you sign up for the subscription. As a subscriber, you can select one of two options for yard waste collection:

  • Rent a 95-gallon cart from Groot for $8.73 for the entire season.
  • Use 30-gallon yard waste bags. If you opt to use yard waste bags, you can set out up to four bags per week without stickers. If you have additional yard waste and need to set out more than four bags, place one yard waste sticker on each bag above four bags. During the month of November, you can set out an unlimited number of bags.

To enroll in the seasonal subscription program, please visit Groot’s website or call Groot at (800) 244-1977.

Pay-by-the-bag

The Village contracts with Groot Industries for weekly curbside landscape waste collection. Landscape waste is collected once per week from April 1 through Nov. 30, unless extended. Fees that are separate from residential garbage and recycling collection apply for this service.

GRASSCYCLE

The most environmentally-friendly option is to not dispose of yard waste at all! Grass clippings make excellent fertilizer, add nutrients to your lawn and reduce evaporation. Mow regularly with sharp blades when the grass is dry. Leaves can be composted cleanly and without odor.

PRIVATE LANDSCAPER

You may choose to contract with a private landscaper for yard waste services at their expense. Please keep in mind that Groot will not pick up un-stickered items that your landscaper may put out on your curb.

Remember, dumping, burning (even in a fireplace), scattering, or burying any type of waste material is prohibited.

Food composting

Residents with yard waste carts can compost food scraps along with their regular yard waste. If you are already enrolled in Groot's landscape waste collection service and rent a 95-gallon cart from Groot (see above), you can begin adding food scraps to the cart.

What can be composted?

Fruits, vegetables, breads/grains, pasta, cereal, dairy (such as cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt and butter; no liquids), eggshells, coffee grounds/tea leaves, grass clippings, garden vegetables, leaves, brush

What cannot be composted?

Teabags/coffee filters, meat, poultry, seafood, shells/bones, paper products (paper towels, plates, napkins, egg cartons, pizza boxes), glass, plastic, Styrofoam, diapers, pet litter, liquids, grease or oil

If you want to participate in the food scraps composting program, you will need to enroll in the landscape waste collection service. To subscribe, contact Groot directly by calling (800) 244-1977. The season subscription cost must include the cart rental to take part in both food scraps and yard waste removal service.
