The Village of Glenview is excited for the return of the Citizens Government Academy! Now in Year 2, the Village will be hosting a seven-week course on the major functions of local government to offer an inside look at how the Village leads and serves the community. This program is designed to provide an opportunity of an in-depth level of engagement between residents and the various departments and staff.
Applications to participate are available via online application or can be printed and submitted using the application at this link. A printout of the application is also available in the Village Hall lobby.
Applications for this upcoming academy will be accepted through April. The Management Services department will contact selected participants to confirm their spot in the academy and inform them of the upcoming schedule. Preferences will be given to Glenview residents or business owners. Participants must be at least 18 years of age.
The program will run at 6:30 p.m. Thursday nights beginning May 26 and concluding July 7.
The following is a brief overview of the different sessions.
Session 1: Village Overview
Date: May 26, 2022 Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Location: Village Hall - 2500 East Lake Avenue
The Glenview Citizens Academy will kick off with an overview of the leadership structure of Village government, the history of the Village from its initial formation, and the operations of the Glenview Public Library.
Session 2: Business and Development
Date: June 2, 2022 Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Location: Village Hall - 2500 East Lake Avenue
Have you ever been curious about the different stages of the development process in Glenview? The Community Development department will present the ins and outs of the property development cycle and long-range planning guided by the Village's Comprehensive Plan, the Economic Development Strategic Plan, and local ordinances.
Session 3: Fire and EMS Services
Date: June 9, 2022 Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Location: Fire Station 14 - 2250 Patriot Boulevard
This session is an opportunity for the residents of the Village to experience and learn about the inner workings of the Fire Department. Not only will members get the chance to participate in exciting opportunities like using the “Jaws of Life", scaling a 50 foot ladder, or using a fire extinguisher, but they will also learn valuable lessons regarding home fire safety, CPR, and the history of the Glenview Fire Department.
Session 4: Public Works Services/Resolution Center
Date: June 16, 2022 Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Location: Public Works - 2498 East Lake Avenue
The Public Works Department, in conjunction with the Resolution Center, will be providing an in-depth overview of the work-order process and how a resident's request gets handled among the various departments. This is also a great opportunity to check out the equipment and machinery that the Public Works Department utilizes to keep our community clean and safe!
Session 5: Police Services
Date: June 23, 2022 Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Location: Village Hall - 2500 East Lake Avenue
The Police Department will be providing participants a glimpse of the Citizen's Police Academy through an overview of the department's functions followed by a station tour. Participants will get a chance to walk through the lockup, the equipment garage, the evidence collection area, the investigations unit, and more.
Session 6: Dispatch Services
Date June 30, 2022 Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Location: Village Hall - 2500 East Lake Avenue
The Village operates two redundant state of the art geo-diverse 9-1-1 police and fire dispatch centers serving a population over 217,000 residents including Glenview and 13 other communities. This is an opportunity for participants to learn about the consolidated dispatch operations and how this benefits our community and some of our neighbors. There will also be a chance to tour one of the two dispatch facilities operated by the Village.
Session 7: Government Budgeting
Date: July 7, 2022 Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Location: Village Hall - 2500 East Lake Avenue
Glenview's Citizen Academy will conclude with an overview of the Village's budget structure. This is an opportunity to learn about how your tax dollars support Village services and programs, the Village's revenue structure, and how the Village builds its zero-based budget every year.
