Appearance Commission

Until July 2021, the Appearance Commission's role was to protect Glenview’s distinctive character by regulating the general appearance of many of its developments. The goal was to ensure that developments were harmonious with their surroundings, contributing to a less cluttered, more attractive community. The Commission reviewed, analyzed and approved all aesthetic changes (including facade alterations, signage and landscaping) to commercial, industrial and multifamily residential developments and issued Certificates of Appropriateness.

Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission was charged with identifying and preserving Glenview's architectural, cultural, environmental and historical resources. The HPC made recommendations to the Village Board of Trustees regarding the designation of properties or districts as local Landmarks or Historic Districts. The commission also reviewed and made recommendations regarding building permit applications for changes to designated Landmarks or structures within Historic Districts.

Plan Commission

​The Plan Commission was responsible for reviewing proposals regarding property development in Glenview. Annexation proposals, rezoning, site plan reviews and zoning code changes, as well as conditional use requests (needed if the use of property could only be permitted in a particular zoning district through a special approval process) were reviewed and recommended to the Village Board of Trustees for final action. The Plan Commission was charged with managing development in the Village in order to ensure that Glenview maintained its balance of high residential standards and thriving businesses, and its open spaces and public places.

Zoning Board of Appeals

​The Zoning Board of Appeals heard cases and held public hearings regarding requested variations from permissible land uses, bulk regulations and other requirements in residential, commercial and industrial zoning districts. Single-family residential variance decisions were final; commercial and multifamily residential variances had to be approved by the Village Board of Trustees.
