The Glenview Fire Department provides fire suppression and advanced life support (ALS) emergency medical services to the residents, businesses and visitors of Glenview and adjacent unincorporated areas formerly served by the Glenbrook Fire Protection District. Responding from five fire stations located throughout the Village, 80 sworn personnel respond to over 8,600 calls for service a year. The department maintains several specialty teams that include technical rescue, dive, hazardous materials, and fire investigations. The department provides fire and accident prevention education to area schools. Public education efforts are evident at festivals and community gatherings.
Purpose & Position Description
Glenview seeks an experienced and dynamic leader to fill the role of Deputy Fire Chief. This position reports directly to the Fire Chief and works as an integral part of the Village’s management team. The Deputy Fire Chief assists in the management and supervision of day-to-day operations, including developing and administering operational guidelines and policies, identifying process improvements, evaluating and recommending appropriate response models; developing strategic goals and objectives; administering personnel matters related to complaints, absences, injuries and disciplinary matters; leading new hire and promotional testing programs; commanding major emergency incidents; preparing, presenting and monitoring budgets and technical reports; and assisting in managing all prevention, suppression, emergency medical, emergency management and emergency preparedness activities. A key requirement of this position is to promote and maintain good customer service practices with the community, as well as internal and external agencies. The position has a high level of discretion with decisions restricted only by Village and departmental policies.
Qualified candidates will possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and have possession of Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal Fire Officer I and EMT-P certifications or equivalent from other state certification programs. Chief Fire Officer Certification is preferred, but not required. A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible fire & EMS experience is required, with three years of experience in management, supervision and incident command at a rank equivalent to Lieutenant, Fire Captain or Battalion Chief. Equivalent combination of education and experience and applicable fire service certifications from other states will be considered.
The candidate must be in possession of a valid driver’s license and meet fit-for-duty standards in accordance with Section 1582 of the NFPA Guidelines.
The successful candidate will have considerable knowledge of all aspects of fire department operations including but not limited to, incident command, emergency medical services, fire prevention, departmental training, administrative actions, local ordinances and disaster preparedness. The candidate must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of effective supervision, promoting teamwork, and mentoring subordinates as it applies to the fire service. Salary & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $112,529 - $157,541 dependent on qualifications.
