The Illinois Department of Transportation is preparing to begin work on an improvement project at the intersection of Waukegan Road and East Lake Avenue. The project, which the Village of Glenview is helping coordinate, will require the removal of up to 29 trees at the intersection. This work is anticipated to be performed on March 7.

While the loss of these trees is unfortunate, the project will provide long-term traffic and environmental benefits, including improved traffic flow, reduced backups, and less idling at one of Glenview’s busiest intersections. Once construction is complete, at least 25 new trees will be planted in the remaining available locations near the intersection.

The improvement project includes adding new, dedicated right-turn lanes to ease congestion, particularly during peak travel times, and providing additional vehicle stacking for the left-turn lanes. Updated streetlights, undergrounding of utility lines and enhanced landscaping are also planned. Decorative sitting walls will be installed at the northwest and southeast corners of the intersection.
