The Village of Glenview Board of Trustees approved financial agreements Tuesday (Sept. 3) that will help facilitate the move of Spiro’s Deli, a Glenview mainstay since 1962, to Downtown Glenview as part of the revitalization of the Village’s Downtown District.
Spiro’s Deli has deep roots in the Glenview community and is one of the longest family-run restaurants in the Village. The restaurant moved locations once in the mid-1990s, and the owners chose to remain in Glenview at its current location at 1210 Waukegan Road.
The new Spiro’s Deli will be located at 1880 Glenview Road, across the street from the Glenview Public Library in the Downtown District. The restaurant will feature an expanded 1,400-square-foot space along with outdoor dining and extended hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The menu will feature beloved favorites, including The Bomber, chicken pita, Italian beef, poor boys, soups, salads, gyros, burgers and hot dogs.
“This is exactly the kind of partner we're excited about bringing to the new Downtown Glenview,” Village President Mike Jenny said. “Spiro’s is a long-standing local business that wants to be a part of what we’re trying to do Downtown, and I hope we can do more like this going forward to continue redeveloping the area.”
Six new Downtown restaurants have now been approved by the Board in the past year. Spiro’s joins Jackman & Co., and Zenzi Den from Ballyhoo Hospitality, Hometown Coffee & Juice, The Foxtail Glenview House, and the planned new restaurant at the corner of Grove and Waukegan.
Spiro’s is proposing to demolish the existing building and build a new restaurant complete with a deli counter and seating for 25 patrons along with a small outdoor patio. The overall cost of the redevelopment, including the purchase of the property, is estimated to be $1.25 million.
The Village is providing a $595,000 loan to be used toward the purchase of the property, and the loan is structured to encourage continuous operation of the restaurant. Spiro’s will be responsible for the construction of the new building in accordance with the Village’s development review process.
