Whether you’ll be joining the kiddos for some trick-or-treat fun or heading to your favorite annual Halloween bash, there’s plenty to consider before choosing a costume, applying makeup, eating a bag full of candy and heading out for some frightful fun.

To make this a fun Halloween for everybody and help keep Glenview’s young ghouls and ghosts safe, here are tips for kids, parents and motorists to remember:

  • Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, remind them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
  • Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
  • Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
  • Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors
  • Motorists should slow down and be extra careful in neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
  • Discourage new or inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween.
