Helpful tips to avoid being scammed
A reminder to residents: Scammers may try to impersonate the Village of Glenview to target citizens and businesses with urgent messages often requesting payment via wire transfer or gift cards.
Typical characteristics of these scams include the following:
- An email or phone call that gives the impression it is from a Village employee is common.
- Emails can include a fake invoice with the Village logo as an attachment that enumerates various fees related to the zoning approval process.
- Phone calls impersonating police officers requesting payment to bail a relative out of lockup is a common form of scam.
- The amount of money requested may vary, but they often request payment in the form of wire transfers or pre-paid gift cards.
Never make any payment via wire transfer or pre-paid gift card. The Village does not accept such payments. If you're ever in doubt, do not open or click on any links or attachments in an email. Do not make payments over the phone. Instead, hang up and call the Village Resolution Center at 847-724-1700 to speak with a Village representative who can assist you.
If you have completed a wire transfer as a result of a scam, or if you wish to report the scam to the FBI, you can do so through the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). That site is available here: https://www.ic3.gov/
If you submit a complaint to the IC3, please also file a police report with the Village of Glenview.
