The U.S. Navy is preparing to begin remediation work this spring at the former Navy landfill site located in the southwest corner of Navy housing off Buccaneer Drive.

The cleanup plan calls for the excavation and removal of all waste and impacted soil, which will be transported to a permitted landfill. Once removal is complete, the site will be restored with clean soil, seeding and native plantings.

Initial work is expected to begin in spring 2026, with the soil removal and backfilling phases anticipated to be completed by the end of the year.

Residents who were unable to attend the Navy's recent open house can still review project materials and learn more about the planned remediation on the Naval Station Great Lakes website.
