The National Weather Service is reporting a threat of strong tornadoes and heavy downpours across Northern Illinois this afternoon into evening. Please have several ways to get weather information.

A few helpful reminders:

  • Ensure your emergency alerts are turned on. Most smartphones will automatically alert you to severe weather if your notifications are active. The Village will also send a text alert if an official Tornado Warning is issued. Opt in for Village texts by texting GVAlerts to 78015. Visit glenview.il.us/texting for more information.
  • A “Watch” means severe storms or tornadoes are possible in your area. Be alert and monitor information. Review and discuss your emergency plans and check supplies and your safe room. Be ready to act quickly if a Warning is issued.
  • A “Warning” means severe weather has been sighted or indicated by radar. There is imminent danger to life and property. Move to an interior room or the lowest level of a sturdy building, avoiding windows where possible. This is also when you hear outdoor warning systems activated - the sirens meant to alert those outdoors to seek shelter. If in a vehicle or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
  • If you experience a power outage, there is no need to call the Police or Fire departments unless you smell smoke or see fire. You can report the outage directly to ComEd at (800) 334-7661 or report it online at comed.com/report. You can track outages and get updates at comed.com/outagemap
  • If you see a downed power line, leave the area immediately and dial 911
  • Street flooding, tree damage and other non-life-threatening events can be reported to the Village using the non-emergency Police line at (847) 729-5000.
  • Remember to use caution when driving through heavy rain. Never walk or drive across flooded roads.
  • Monitor local weather conditions via local media and the National Weather Service
