Protecting Your Water: What to Know About Cross Connection Control
The Village of Glenview has contracted with Aqua Backflow to assist with managing its Cross Connection Control Program, which is mandated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA).
A cross connection is any real or potential connection between the water supply and a source that can contaminate or pollute that water. A cross connection control system is designed to prevent that backflow from happening and helps protect public health by making sure the water that comes out of faucets remains clean and safe to drink.
Aqua Backflow will send a survey annually to property owners with backflow systems. Please know these are sent on behalf of the Village, and your timely response helps safeguard public health.
If you have questions, email info@aquabackflow.com or call Aqua Backflow at 847-742-2296.
Common cross connections can be found at:
- Commercial properties that use carbonated beverage machines and ice-makers, fire sprinkler systems and x-ray machines.
- Residential properties with lawn irrigation, fire sprinkler systems and even a common garden hose, when submerged in water.
Backflow preventers may be found in a number of locations on your water system. Typically, commercial customers will have backflow preventers just after the water meter and on wet fire protection systems. There may also be lawn irrigation systems with backflow protection. Note, too, other water connections may also require backflow protection, such as boilers, chillers, and process piping.
Backflow preventers are the property of the water customer, and the responsibility is with the property owner for annual testing and maintenance. Water customers must hire a licensed tester to perform the required annual tests. Most local plumbers are certified to test backflow preventers.
If you do not receive a mailer from Aqua and believe you have a backflow prevention system or need one, please contact Aqua Backflow at info@aquabackflow.com or call 847-742-2296.
