For the eighth year, the Village of Glenview will recognize local organizations and individuals that have demonstrated leadership in environmental stewardship, sustainable practices, and community outreach.

The Environmental Sustainability Awards, sponsored by the Environment & Natural Resources Commission, were formally presented during the Village Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at Village Hall.

Nominations were accepted for actions taken between Jan. 1 and Dec. 1, 2025. Eligible nominees included businesses, schools, houses of worship, volunteer groups and other organizations and individuals that serve the Glenview community.

The Environmental Sustainability Awards were created in 2018 to encourage practical steps that help prevent pollution, reduce waste, conserve energy, limit emissions to air and water, and increase recycling. Highlighting these success stories helps to inspire others in the community to collaborate and share strategies, policies and best practices for a more sustainable community.

The 2025 Environmental Sustainability Awards winners are:

The American College of Chest Physicians: As the leading professional association in innovative chest medicine, The American College of Chest Physicians installed solar panels atop its Glenview headquarters to reduce its carbon footprint and lower emissions that contribute to poor air quality. The solar panels will help power CHEST’s state-of-the-art medical simulation facility, which welcomes thousands of clinicians from around the world each year.

Glenbrook South Interact Club: Working in partnership with the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise, the Glenbrook South High School Interact Club created visually appealing lawn signs to raise awareness and publicly highlight buckthorn, an invasive species in the region. The signs provided residents with easy access to information about buckthorn, including a QR code that linked to the Village’s Buckthorn Removal Incentive Program.

Greener Glenview: Greener Glenview’s food scraps drop-off pilot program was designed to divert food waste from the landfill and educate Glenview residents that food scraps are not garbage. Greener Glenview placed free food scrap collection bins at the Glenview Public Library and the Village’s Public Works Service Center for residents to drop off their scraps. As a result, more than 220 households registered for the program, 115 bins of food scraps were collected, and 15,575 pounds of food waste were diverted from landfills. Beginning in February 2026, the Village will take over funding and managing the program.

Hoffman School: A team of teachers at Hoffman School created a ‘Buzz Garden’ outside of the school that features plants, herbs and vegetables. The garden is maintained by student helpers alongside staff. Additionally, a rain barrel was purchased for the garden and materials were acquired for classrooms to participate in composting for the garden. The Buzz Garden space, rain barrel and composting program have been used as part of the classroom curriculum to teach the lessons of gardening, water conservation, composting and more.

Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise: The Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise launched ‘Operation Pollination,’ an inclusive, community-driven initiative that expands pollinator habitats and promotes pollinator-focused education. The group purchased a wide variety of native plants, materials and gardening tools to establish pollinator gardens at 13 homes throughout Glenview. The club also provided financial support to four area groups that are leading pollinator-related projects.
