Environmental Sustainability Awards

Environmental sustainability is about the future. Adopting practices like preventing pollution, reducing waste, conserving energy, reducing emissions to air and water, boosting recycling and protecting our natural resources are to be celebrated at a time when providing better, cleaner tomorrows is a priority.

Because the Village of Glenview wants to recognize individuals or organizations in Glenview that are taking the lead with environmental stewardship, innovative best practices and community outreach, the Village's Environment and Natural Resources Commission sponsors an environmental sustainability awards program. Nominees can be individuals that have been committed to improving environmental sustainability in Glenview or any organization, including businesses, schools, houses of worship and volunteer groups, that serve the Glenview community. Examples of eligible activities are:

  • Projects that reduce waste to landfill, conserve energy, use renewable energy, reduce raw material usage, reduce water usage, reduce emissions to air or water (either sewer, ground or surface waters) use native landscaping, increase usage of recycled products or materials, allow for re-use/re-purposing of materials, use ‘green materials’ with reduced environmental impacts compared to traditional materials, create sustainability related employee involvement activities, improve product/processes as result of sustainability, increase sustainability education/outreach, or obtaining environmental certifications.
  • Support for either the Glenview Plan for Nature or the Glenview Sustainability Plan
  • Demonstration of leadership, innovation or educating others in an area of environmental sustainability.

There is a separate youth category for activities led by those that are high school age or younger. To nominate itself or be nominated by another, an organization should have completed the activities and achieved results that support the nomination within the past 12 months. Nominators will need to provide a narrative piece describing the nominee’s experience, their rationale for acting, their successes, and the environmental results, outcomes, or change in practices generated by themselves or those they influenced. Providing supporting documentation is encouraged.

Meeting the sustainable energy challenges of the 21st Century starts at home, in the workplace and in our schools. Success stories, if replicated, can positively effect our future. So let's start by recognizing the good environmental stewards in our community.

Innovation – Glenview Public Library

The Glenview Public Library transformed its rooftop terrace into a sustainable native habitat. Native plants were carefully selected to attract essential pollinators like hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. The project was also expanded to include vital features such as a water source for birds and insects, bee hotels to offer shelter, and an even greater variety of native flora.

Innovation – Glenview Park District and Greener Glenview

The Glenview Park District and Greener Glenview hosted the second annual SportSwap in August 2024, where residents exchanged gently used sports equipment for vouchers to purchase reusable items at bargain prices. Unsold items were donated to Goodwill, and the event raised $1,034 for the Glenview Park Foundation's You Leisureship Program. SportSwap promoted sustainability by keeping hundreds of items out of landfills and encouraging residents to rethink the value of used goods.

Leadership – Attea Middle School and Greener Glenview

An Attea Middle School student collaborated with Greener Glenview's Native Habitat Project and proposed a Pollinator Garden on school grounds to the principal and environmental clubs. The Environmental Club and Hope Club worked together to install and maintain native plants, earning National Wildfire Federation certification for the new habitat. The garden supports a variety of pollinators and contributes to the growing corridor of native habitats throughout Glenview.
