During your vacation/leave, a Glenview Police Department officer will attempt to visually inspect the exterior of your property on a periodic basis to look for open doors or windows or other visible signs of possible security breaches. These inspections will be subject to officer availability based on shift scheduling, emergency response, and performance of other required duties. GPD makes no guarantees or warranties that the inspections will occur or regarding the security of your property as a result of these efforts. Please remember that GPD officers are on duty 24/7, so these inspections may occur at any time. It is therefore imperative that you contact GPD immediately at (847) 729-5000 if you need to cancel this request, return early or otherwise change the date of your departure/return. Vacant house watch requests must be received three business days before the date you will be leaving for vacation.

Child passenger safety technicians, certified through the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, are available to inspect child car seats and booster seats for proper use. These inspections are done by appointment only. All child safety seats must be installed prior to the inspection. Reference your specific vehicle owner's manual and seat instruction manual and/or manufacturer's website for guidance on initial installation.

Technicians will inspect the seat installation and help you make any adjustments if necessary. The technicians will require your full attention and willingness to learn as this is an educational service, not an installation service.

Car seat checks are offered during business hours by appointment only. This service is offered to Glenview residents only, and proof of residency is required.

The Police Department's officers will offer assistance with wild or stray animals.

Village of Glenview does not require pet owners to register their pets. Previously under Village Code, an identification tag for your dog or cat was required and either available from the Village of Glenview or obtained by the pet owner (which displays the owner's contact information ). As of July 7, 2020, under ​Village Code, the Village will no longer provide animal tags, but owners are still required to identify their dog or cat by a tag with the same information. Dogs and cats are also still required to obtain and wear the Cook County rabies vaccination tag as well. ​ Click here​ for more information about the elimination of the program. ​

Also by ordinance, residents may not allow their personal dogs or dangerous, unruly, fierce, or mischievous animals to run at large in the Village. Residents must keep such animals leashed. Officers may impound such animals that are not leashed and cite their owner.

The Glenview Police Department will provide fingerprints to applicants for employment and background applications by appointment only. The resident must supply the appropriate fingerprint card(s).

The Glenview Police Department does not provide fingerprints for any prints that require electronic transmission. See the Illinois State Police Firearms Service Bureau website for information.

The Police Department employs a licensed clinical social worker to provide social services to village residents and victims of crimes. There is no charge for the services provided:

• Short term counseling for individuals, couples, and families dealing with domestic violence, marital conflict, child/parent issues, mental-health issues, grief and loss, sexual assault, substance abuse, elder-care issues, and runaway/lockout issues
• Crisis counseling and court advocacy for victims and witnesses of domestic violence, sexual assaults and violent crimes, and provides assistance with orders of protection
• 24-hour crisis response to traumatic incidents occurring in the village
• Critical incident response to community or workplace incidents
• Emergency financial assistance and assistance with applications under the Crime Victim Compensation Act
• Information and referral for additional services

The Illinois Premise Alert Program (Public Act 96-0788) provides for public safety agencies in the State of Illinois to allow people with disabilities, special needs, or both to provide information to police, fire and EMS personnel to be kept in a database. The information provided can be used to offer guidance and assistance to public safety workers in responding to and assisting those persons with disabilities or special needs. In Illinois, residents are required to obtain a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card to legally possess firearms or ammunition. This card is issued on a shall-issue basis by the Illinois State Police. However, non-residents who are allowed to possess firearms in their home state are exempt from this requirement. 

To carry a concealed handgun, applicants must be at least 21 years old and pass a 16-hour training course. Any law enforcement agency can object to an applicant's license if they suspect the applicant poses a danger to themselves, others, or public safety. The Concealed Carry Licensing Review Board considers objections and makes a decision based on a preponderance of evidence. Licenses issued by other states are not valid, except for carrying in a vehicle. Open carry is prohibited. 

If a person without a concealed carry license is transporting a firearm, they must ensure it is unloaded and enclosed in a case, broken down in a non-functioning state, or not immediately accessible. The sale of firearms defined as assault weapons is prohibited as of Jan. 10, 2023. Existing assault weapons are grandfathered in if registered with the state police by Jan. 1, 2024.​

If you are a gun owner, please take extreme care to store your gun(s) safely and properly. The following are firearm storage tips from Project Childsafe​: ​

Store unloaded firearms in a locked cabinet, safe, gun vault, or storage safe.

• Unloaded firearms can also be secured with a gun locking device that renders the gun inoperable, but gun locks are not a substitute for secure storage. These devices are available free of charge from the Glenview Police Department.
• Always check firearms to be sure they are still unloaded when you remove them from storage.
• If firearms are disassembled, parts should be securely locked in separate locations. 
• Store ammunition separately and securely. 
• If you are concerned about quick access to your firearm, consider a special lockable case that can be quickly opened only by you/authorized individuals.

Free gun locks are available from the Glenview Police Department. These gun locks can be used on both handguns and long guns. Residents may pick one (or more) up in the lobby of the Glenview Police Department at 2500 E Lake Ave at any time.​

If you have a firearm that you would like to surrender to be destroyed, you may bring it to the Glenview Police Department at 2500 E Lake Ave at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No one will be subject to prosecution for turning in any handgun or ammunition.
